A gas cooktop that clicks after a summer of indoor cooking is usually a greasy or unused spark electrode, not a reason to keep holding the knob. Wipe only the dry electrode with power off. Never force ignition if you smell gas. When sparking continues without a flame, a range repair visit is safer than more DIY.
Grease, heat, and idle back burners leave film on the ceramic tip so the spark never jumps to the ports. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission treats delayed or failed ignition on gas appliances as a fuel-release hazard: unburned gas in a kitchen is the problem, not a weak click. That is why you stop at a dry wipe and you do not keep sparking the burner.

Why a cooktop clicks and never catches

Safe steps when it only clicks
Turn the burner off. If you smell gas, leave the home immediately, shut the appliance valve only if you can do so safely on the way out, and call the gas utility from outside. Do not wait for the odor to clear, ventilate from inside, or resume cleaning or sparking until the utility says the area is clear.
If there is no gas odor, confirm the gas valve is open. With power off, gently wipe only the electrode tip and nearby ports with a dry cloth. Never put liquids into the spark well.
If it still clicks without lighting, a technician should test the igniter module, wiring, and gas flow rather than you holding a match. Lighting with a match after failed sparking can still dump gas first. Skip that.
Do not keep the knob in the spark position hoping the next click will catch. Repeated clicking without ignition can release unburned gas.
Gas red flags, not more sparking
It can be dangerous. Leave the area, shut the appliance valve if you can do so safely, and do not use electrical switches if you smell gas. A persistent odor, hissing, or delayed ignition after a click are red flags that need a licensed repair visit, not more DIY sparking.

Trade-off: a dry cloth costs nothing and sometimes restores a blue flame in minutes. Holding the knob, soaking the well, or forcing a match after failed sparking trades that small win for unburned gas in the room. Stop at the wipe.
