How a cool roof rejects heat at the deck
A cool roof coating, cool roof paint, or cool roof shingles work at the outer skin of the house, not in the living space. Sunlight never becomes as much heat in the first place. That is why they help most on dark, sun-baked decks common on 1970s tract houses around the Sacramento area.
Skip stacking a cheap whitewash over failing shingles and calling it done. Which one to pick without replacing the AC
A cool roof is the better first move when you are already reroofing a dark deck. A radiant barrier is the better first move when the shingles still have years left and the attic is accessible, ventilated, and not packed to the rafters with blown cellulose.
Do not treat this as a new-system substitute. A failing compressor, a cracked heat exchanger, or a dead capacitor still needs repair. Reflective roof work only cuts the extra heat the equipment should not have been asked to eat.
Time the work before another 100° streak if you can. September still delivers those days here, and the Delta breeze does not always show up when the valley inversion holds heat overnight.
SMUD bills, peak hours, and why the attic still matters
