A front load washer door lock that will not release after the cycle almost always means the washer still senses water in the drum. Turn off the child lock, run a drain and spin cycle, and clean the drain filter at the bottom front. Only when the drum is empty and the door still stays locked has the lock itself failed.
The design explains the problem. ENERGY STAR certified washers use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than standard models, and a front loader saves its water by tumbling clothes through a shallow pool instead of filling a tub. Federal efficiency standards from the U.S. Department of Energy push every new washer in the same low-water direction. With so little water moving, lint, hair and small objects settle in the drain path instead of flushing away. When that path clogs, water stays in the drum, and the washer will not open its door over standing water.
Why Does the Door Stay Locked After the Cycle?
The washer keeps the door locked until two things are true: the drum has stopped turning and the water level sensor reads empty. Most models release the lock a minute or two after the cycle ends. If the lock icon stays lit longer than that, the washer still senses water, the child lock is on, or the lock has failed.
Here is a typical October call. A Rancho Cordova family washes the first load of flannel sheets of the season. The cycle ends, the display shows the lock icon, and the door will not budge. Behind the small panel at the bottom front, the drain filter holds a baby sock, two hair ties and a wad of lint. Once the drum is emptied through the little drain hose and the filter is cleared, the next drain cycle runs normally and the door clicks open.
Bulky fall loads cause more of these than summer laundry does. Comforters and blankets shed more lint, and they hide small items better.
Start With the Child Lock and a Drain Cycle
Check the child lock first, because it is the easiest fix and the easiest thing to miss. On most washers it is a small padlock or child icon on the display, turned on and off by holding two buttons together for a few seconds. Your manual names the pair.
Then select the drain and spin cycle. If the washer drains and the drum spins, the door usually unlocks a minute or two later. If you hear the drain pump hum but no water moves, the drain path is blocked. If you hear nothing at all, the pump or its control is not running, and that points toward a repair.
Clean the Drain Filter
A clogged drain filter is the most common reason a front load washer is not draining. It sits behind a small panel at the bottom front of most models. Unplug the washer before you open that panel.
Drain the drum completely before you touch the filter. Most models have a short drain hose next to it: put down towels and a shallow baking pan, pull the hose out, uncap it and let the water run out a little at a time until it stops completely. Only then unscrew the filter slowly, pull out what is caught in it, rinse it and screw it back in snugly. Loosen the filter on a full drum and the water comes out faster than any pan can catch. Clean it every few months even without a problem; it takes five minutes.
Our position is simple: clean the filter before you do anything else to a locked door. It solves more locked-door calls than any part replacement.
Reset the Power, Then Try the Emergency Release
Leave the washer unplugged for a few minutes, then plug it back in. A power reset clears a control that lost track of the cycle, and on many models the door releases on its own once the drum reads empty.
If it still will not open, unplug the washer again before you reach for the emergency release your manual shows. Many front loaders have a pull cord or tab near the drain filter panel that unlatches the door by hand. Use it only with the washer unplugged and the drum empty. Never force the door handle. The latch hook is thin plastic on most models, and a broken latch turns a free fix into a repair.
When the Lock Itself Has Failed
The door lock assembly is one of the most common parts to fail on a front loader that otherwise runs fine. It is an electric latch with a small switch that tells the control the door is closed and locked. When the latch, the switch or its wiring fails, you see one of two symptoms: the door stays locked with an empty drum, or the washer will not start because it cannot confirm the door is locked.
A failed lock is a common, moderate repair. A control board that never sends the unlock signal is less common and costs more.
When to Call a Pro
Call a technician when the drum is empty, the child lock is off, the power reset did nothing and the door still will not release. Call too when the washer will not drain after the filter is clean, when the drain pump stays silent during a drain cycle, or when the washer shows a door-lock error code that returns after a reset.

Release a front load washer door that stays locked
Wait and check the child lock
Give the washer two minutes after the cycle ends, then make sure the child lock icon is off on the display.
Run drain and spin
Select the drain and spin cycle so the washer can empty any water left in the drum.
Unplug and drain the drum
Unplug the washer, then empty the drum through the short drain hose beside the filter into a shallow pan until no more water comes out.
Clean the drain filter
Only after the drum is fully drained, unscrew the filter slowly, clear what is caught in it and screw it back in snugly.
Plug in and try the door
After a few minutes, plug the washer back in and give the door a minute or two to release on its own.
Unplug, then use the emergency release
If the door stays locked with an empty drum, unplug the washer again and only then pull the emergency release your manual shows, usually near the drain filter.
